This is a project done for Design Process class. The assignment was to create a poster for a festival occurring in the spring/summer in the GTA. I chose to create a poster for North by Northeast (NXNE), a music, film, art, comedy, and interactive festival which occurs in multiple venues in Toronto, most famously hosting free concerts at Yonge and Dundas Square.
I decided to update NXNE's logo and give the overall design a more modern, simplistic, and graphic look. Most music lovers in Canada will already know of the festival so I decided to add a minimal amount of detail of the actual festivities.
For this final, I removed the '#21' as I viewed it as redundant. I softened the social media icons for a less harsh look, and added a gradient background which I think would appeal to more viewers and make the event seem less elementary, although the shapes and colours are very playful. I used the font 'Print' downloaded from fontsquirrel.com; I think it adds a more rounded and fun experience to the poster, and complements the shapes and squiggles.
The two X's and the I (XXI) represent the 21st consecutive year Toronto will host NXNE. For the I, I included the different categories of the festival, and bolded the genre this poster was for (music). This poster can be edited to be genre/category interchangeable - the names of the bands and musicians can be replaced with the names of art exhibitions, comedians, films, etc. The names displayed here are the top 16 headliners billed on the official NXNE 2015 music poster.
Included here is a CD case insert I created to go along with the festival poster. It is a study on the continuation of design through multiple objects. I included many of the original aspects of the poster, as well as played around with gradients, columns and grids, and the composition and application of shapes.
